There's a sense of panic that the director, screenwriter, and cast won't capture everything you love about the words and characters the author created. Anyone who's ever loved a book knows the hesitance and wariness that mingle with excitement when a beloved novel is turned into a big-screen production. While The Fault in Our Stars isn't a word-for-word translation (nor should it be), it's an adaptation that does Green, Hazel, and Augustus justice. A great film for adults and teens alike, and one whose story and themes can be a great springboard for discussion of heavy topics between parents and teens. While much much heavier of a topic and theme than most teen movies, it’s a topic that needs to be addressed, particularly to teens who know people suffering from terminal illnesses. Author John Green stated that the main objective of the story is to show that one can still have a fulfilling life even if it’s short. I personally choose to skip it when watching it at home (~1:16:16 to 1:19:05).Įvery other great thing about the film has been addressed in detail, and it is an extremely successful story and one of the best teenage romances. The novel mentions the use of birth control, but the film does not. Nothing obscene is shown, but there is blatant heavy petting and the sexual tension is very high before cutting away after they are undressed. In my opinion it went on longer than necessary and is one of the more explicit foreplay scenes for a PG-13 movie.
The main scene to be concerned about is the sex scene between an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old. Gus also famously carries cigarettes but never lights them. Two scenes depict the teenaged protagonists drinking champagne (though one is set in Amsterdam where it might have technically been legal at their age), and one scene depicts an antagonistic character drinking before breakfast, implying overt alcoholism. The movie contains marginally less swearing than the book, but nothing too shocking or unheard of to any teen who’s been in a public school. The book and film were released when I was a teenager and I was really impressed with the way Green accurately captured teenage behavior. The main aspects of the film to be worried about are some language (including a very blatant f-bomb), some casual underaged drinking, and some nudity during a foreplay scene. As long as your teens are ready for all the feelings, sadness, and romance, this is a lovely film to watch with them, especially since Hazel's parents are portrayed so positively (they're supportive, loving, and understanding). Gus also frequently puts unlit cigarettes in his mouth. Language is rare but does include one use of "f-k," as well as words like "s-t" and "a-hole." The teen characters drink champagne together, and a key adult supporting character is a drunk who's nearly always sipping from something. The central relationship is beautiful and mature and does lead to a love scene, which is handled tastefully for teen audiences (a girl's naked back and boy's chest are seen).
Due to the subject matter, it should come as no surprise that the movie can get emotionally intense - especially when there's a devastating death.
Parents need to know that The Fault in Our Stars is a tear-jerking love story about two deep-thinking teens with cancer and is based on one of the most beloved young adult books in recent history, by superstar author John Green.
